Gardening in an allotment can improve mood and self-esteem, according to research by two universities.

The study, by Westminster and Essex universities, questioned 269 people - around half of whom did some gardening.

The results revealed that those who spent as little as 30 minutes a week in their allotments saw significant gains in mental well-being, according to the Journal of Public Health.
The research also showed the allotment gardeners had fewer weight problems.
The participants were questioned about their mood, self-esteem and general health.
Those who had worked in their allotments at least once a week had lower levels of fatigue, depression, tension and anger - and had higher self-esteem and better general health - than those who had done no gardening at all. 

They also had a significantly lower body mass index (BMI), reflecting a healthier body weight than those who did not garden.

The length of time spent gardening did not alter the results, meaning that fitting 30 minutes into schedules was still beneficial.

With urban living on the rise, along with the risk of poor mental health, co-author Dr Carly Wood, from the University of Essex, said: "Allotment gardening might play an important role in promoting mental well-being in people residing in urban areas."

But many garden allotments have long waiting lists, the study mentions.


President of the UK Faculty of Public Health, Prof John Ashton, said: "We need a strategy that considers how we could make better use of neglected land that marks the transition from towns to cities."

The world's largest clinical trial to examine whether aspirin can prevent cancers returning has begun in the UK.
About 11,000 people who have had early bowel, breast, prostate, stomach and oesophageal cancer will be involved.
Uncertainty about the drug's possible anti-cancer qualities has led to fierce medical debate in recent years.
If it is proven to work, scientists say it would be "game-changing", by providing a cheap and effective way to help more patients survive.
During the study, funded by the charity Cancer Research UK and the NIHR - the research arm of the NHS - patients will take a tablet every day for five years.

'Toughest experiences'

Researchers will compare groups of patients taking different doses of aspirin with people taking dummy (placebo) pills and check for any recurrences of cancer.
Dr Fiona Reddington from Cancer Research UK said: "The trial is especially exciting as cancers that recur are often harder to treat so finding a cheap and effective way to prevent this is potentially game-changing for patients."
The trial will run across 100 UK centres, involving patients who are having or have had treatment for early cancer, and will last up to 12 years.
But scientists warn that aspirin is not suitable for everyone and should not be used without medical advice.
Taking the drug every day comes with a serious health warning as it can cause side effects such as ulcers and bleeding from the stomach, or even the brain.

Clear proof sought

Prof Ruth Langley, lead investigator on the trial, said: "There's been some interesting research suggesting that aspirin could delay or stop early stage cancers coming back but there's been no randomised trial to give clear proof.
"The trial aims to answer this question once and for all.
"If we find that aspirin does stop these cancers returning, it could change future treatment - providing a cheap and simple way to help stop cancer coming back and helping more people survive."
Alex King, 51, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2009 and has been given the all-clear, said: "Having cancer was one of the toughest experiences of my life.
"Any opportunity to reduce the chance of cancer coming back is incredibly important so patients can rest more easily."
Many people are already prescribed daily, low-dose aspirin as a heart drug.

Processed meats - such as bacon, sausages and ham - do cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Its report said 50g of processed meat a day - less than two slices of bacon - increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%.
Meanwhile, it said red meats were "probably carcinogenic" but there was limited evidence.
The WHO did stress that meat also had health benefits.
Cancer Research UK said this was a reason to cut down rather than give up red and processed meats.
And added that an occasional bacon sandwich would do little harm.

WHAT IS PROCESSED MEAT?


Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives.
Simply putting beef through a mincer does not mean the resulting mince is "processed" unless it is modified further.
Processed meat includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces.

It is the chemicals involved in the processing which could be increasing the risk of cancer. High temperature cooking, such as on a barbeque, can also create carcinogenic chemicals.
In the UK, around six out of every 100 people get bowel cancer at some point in their lives.
If they were all given an extra 50g of bacon a day for the rest of their lives then the risk would increase by 18% to around seven in 100 people getting bowel cancer.
"So that's one extra case of bowel cancer in all those 100 lifetime bacon-eaters," argued Sir David Spiegelhalter, a risk professor from the University of Cambridge.

HOW MUCH HARM?


he WHO has come to the conclusion on the advice of its International Agency for Research on Cancer, which assesses the best available scientific evidence.
It has now placed processed meat in the same category as plutonium, but also alcohol as they definitely do cause cancer.
However, this does not mean they are equally dangerous. A bacon sandwich is not as bad as smoking.
"For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed," Dr Kurt Straif from the WHO said.
Estimates suggest 34,000 deaths from cancer every year could be down to diets high in processed meat.
That is in contrast to one million deaths from cancer caused by smoking and 600,000 attributed to alcohol each year.
Red meat does have nutritional value too and is a major source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12.
However, the WHO said there was limited evidence that 100g of red meat a day increased the risk of cancer by 17%.


Tuberculosis now ranks alongside HIV as the world's most deadly infectious disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
Each accounted for between 1.1 million and 1.2 million deaths in 2014.
The WHO said the tuberculosis figures were unacceptable for a disease that could be cured.
Medecins Sans Frontieres said the statistics were "disheartening" and warned the world was "losing ground" on tackling resistant forms of TB.
The WHO's Global Tuberculosis Report 2015 shows the huge strides that have been made in tackling TB, with the death rate being nearly halved since 1990.
And the number of infections has been falling by 1.5% a year since 2000.
Deaths from HIV/Aids have also been falling rapidly because of improved access to anti-retroviral drugs.
Dr Mario Raviglione, the WHO's tuberculosis director, told the BBC News website: "Tuberculosis and HIV are now competing to be the number one cause of death from infectious disease in the world.
"Tuberculosis now ranks alongside HIV."
Most new cases of TB are in China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria or Pakistan.

Deaths from HIV/Aids have been falling since the mid-2000s, and stand at 1.2 million a year.
Overall there were 1.5 million tuberculosis deaths in 2014.
But 400,000 of them are officially counted as Aids deaths as they were in HIV positive patients.
The WHO now considers TB and HIV to be effectively joint top killers.
WHO director-general Margaret Chan said there had been "tremendous impact" since 1990, but added that "if the world is to end this epidemic, it needs to scale up services and, critically, invest in research".
Dr Raviglione agreed, saying that if the international investment in TB matched that of HIV, then "we could have accelerated the decline in mortality".

Resistance

The report also highlights the dangers of tuberculosis becoming resistant to antibiotics.
About three in every 100 new cases of TB could not be treated with first choice antibiotics.
Dr Grania Brigden, from Medecins Sans Frontieres, said it was "yet another year of disheartening statistics" that should "serve as a wake-up call".
She added: "We're losing ground in the battle to control drug-resistant forms of TB, and without considerable corrective action, the vast majority of people with multi-drug resistant TB won't ever be diagnosed, put on treatment, or cured."
The World Health Organization will shift to its End TB Strategy next year, which aims to cut deaths by 90% by 2030.

  • Drink peppermint tea once or twice a day. To make the tea, add 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves to a cup of hot water. Cover and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink it.
  • Eat fresh peppermint leaves daily by sprinkling them over your dishes or add them to your salads.
     

      4. Apple cider Vinegar

  •  Another ingredient that helps keep your digestive system in good health is apple cider vinegar. Though acidic in nature, it has an alkalizing effect in your body.
     
    1. Add 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water.
    2. Mix in a little raw honey.
    3. Drink this 2 or 3 times a day to maintain a healthy digestive system.
     

    5. Turmeric

    •  Another herb used to treat common digestive disorders is turmeric. Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, stimulates the gallbladder to release bile.
    This aids digestion and improves liver function. Its anti-inflammatory property also helps reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

    • Drink ½ teaspoon of turmeric juice with a glass of water a day to prevent digestive problems. You can also include raw turmeric in your regular cooking.
    • Another option is to take curcumin supplements. For proper dosage and suitability, consult your doctor.


  •  Production of gas is a natural part of the digestive process so need not worry about the  gas.The to and fro motion continues life time so you guys need to take care about the  stomach for the minimal gas and reduction of gas.
  • Excess gas in the stomach can be caused by a number of things, such as excessive drinking, not chewing your food thoroughly, eating spicy and gas-forming food, too much stress, some kind of bacterial infection, or digestive disorders.
  • Symptoms of stomach gas include flatulence, bad breath, lack of appetite, a coating on the tongue, abdominal bloating, belching and even stomach pain.

  • THIS PROBLEM CAN BE TREATED WITH SIMPLE HOME REMIDIES

    1. Cinnamon 

    • Cinnamon will soothe your stomach and also prevent further formation of gas.
    • Add one-half teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of warm milk. Stir it well and then drink it. You can also add some honey.
    • Alternatively, you can make cinnamon tea by adding some cinnamon powder to a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for a few minutes and then drink it.

    2. Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar, used in the treatment of indigestion, can also help with gas. This remedy will soothe the stomach and give you instant relief.
    • Add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water.
    • Allow the water to cool to room temperature, and then drink it.

    3. Ginger

    • Take equal parts of ground ginger, fennel, and cardamom. Mix them thoroughly. Now, take a cup of water. Add one teaspoon of this mixture and a pinch of asafetida (hing) in it. Drink this once or twice a day.
    • To prevent gas from forming, chew a fresh piece of ginger regularly after meals. You can also add small amounts of dried or fresh ginger to your food.
    • Drinking ginger tea can help control the formation of gas in the stomach. Boil one tablespoon of ground ginger in water for a few minutes. Drink this tea two or three times a day.

    4. Buttermilk

    • Buttermilk, especially when combined with carom seeds and black salt works as an excellent Ayurvedic remedy to relieve gas and flatulence.
    • Mix one teaspoon each of carom seeds (ajwain) and black salt in a cup of buttermilk. If you do not have carom seeds, use celery seeds.

    5. Baking Soda and Lemon

    • Put the juice of one fresh lemon in a glass and add some baking soda to it. This will cause fizzing. Add some more baking soda and a cup of water and stir it well so the baking soda dissolves completely. Drink this slowly.
    • For instant relief from stomach gas, you can add a small amount of baking soda to a glass of water and drink it on empty stomach.

    6. Garlic

    • The pungent heating quality present in garlic helps stimulate the gastric fire and thus offers relief from stomach gas.
    • Try some garlic soup to reduce gas and help with proper digestion.
    • You can also boil some ground garlic in water for a few minutes, adding a small amount of black pepper and cumin seeds. Strain it and let it cool to room temperature. Drink this two or three times a day to see results in a few days.

    7. Fennel

    • Fennel is surely the best ingredient for fast relief from bloating and gas and also acid reflux.
    • Add a few fennel seeds to a pot of hot water and let it simmer it for five minutes on a low temperature. Strain the solution and then drink it.
    • Alternatively, you can mix fennel, cardamom and mint leaves and boil them in water to make a concoction that can help with stomach gas.

    8.Peppermint

    • Make tea by adding some fresh peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water and letting it steep for a few minutes. Strain it and add some honey. Drink the tea two or three times a day.
    • Alternatively, you can put two drops of peppermint oil in one-half cup of cool water and drink it once or twice daily.

     9.Cardamom

    • This is another common kitchen spice that can speed up digestion and give you relief from stomach gas.
    • Simply add some roasted cardamom powder to vegetables, rice or lentils before cooking to prevent gas.
    • You can make a tea by steeping a few pods of cardamom along with a small slice of fresh ginger and one teaspoon of fennel in boiling water for several minutes. Drink this tea warm, several times a day.
